Wheelchair Ramps: A Practical Guide

When choosing a wheelchair ramp, there are 5 factors to consider: rise, ramp length, weight capacity, and ramp width.

" Rise: Rise is the vertical measurement from the starting point to desired height.

" Ramp Length: Dictated by the rise, make sure that is ample clearance for barrier free access.

" Weight: Add the total weight of the wheelchair/scooter to the user, then make sure that number is under the wheelchair ramps weight capacity. Generally, our ramps can accommodate 600 to 700 lbs of total weight.

" Ramp Width: Make sure to consider ramp width. The landing point and starting point must have enough clearance on either side to lay flat.

Wheelchair ramps come in two major classifications: permanent and non-permanent. Permanent ramps offer access to fixed areas, like buildings and train stations. Non-permanent can move with the wheelchair users. There are 3 basic non-permanent wheelchair ramp styles:

Threshold Ramps: Perfect for small rises like doorway thresholds. These wheelchair ramps can accommodate a rise of 6.25 inches or less.

Folding Ramps: These ramps are ideal in the house or when traveling. As the name implies, folding ramping fold onto themselves for easy transport.

Telescoping Ramps: Popular with mini-van owners, telescoping offer accessibility to higher rises. And just like a telescope, these ramps contracts upon itself for trouble-free storage.

We strongly suggest you call a mobility care professional when finally considering your wheelchair ramp purchase. They will make sure you find the right ramp for the right job.
